We have all been there. I too have wasted a zillion hours trying to choose a website platform and then a zillion more hours finding the right hosting, theme and plugins for my tech stack. It’s information overload!

Do you go for the ease of a website builder or the power of self-hosted WordPress?

Choosing the right platform for you and your business is like choosing the right outfit. Do you need a comfy pair of trackies or a tailored suit – both have their place, but which one’s right for you and for where you are heading?

Let’s look at some of the pros and cons of each.

Website Platform Options: A Quick Overview

Before we dive into the specifics, let’s get familiar with the two main categories:

Hosted Website Builders: These platforms offer an all-in-one solution with hosting, templates, and features included. They usually have drag-and-drop interfaces for easy website building. Popular options include:
- General Purpose: Wix, Squarespace, GoDaddy Website Builder. These are great for creating various types of websites, from blogs to portfolios.
- E-commerce Focused: Shopify is the big player here. It’s specifically designed for building online stores, with features like product management, payment processing, and inventory tracking.
Self-Hosted WordPress (Wordpress.org): This is a professional tool and a total powerhouse that powers over 40% of the internet. You choose your own hosting provider, install WordPress, and have complete control over your website’s design and functionality. (Note: This is different from WordPress.com, which is a hosted version with limitations.)

WordPress: Your Website, Your Way

Now, I’m a bit biased (okay, maybe a lot!), but WordPress is pretty darn amazing. It’s like building your dream home – you get to design it exactly how you want, with all the bells and whistles.

Flexibility: Want a unique website that truly reflects your brand? WordPress gives you the freedom to customise everything, from the colours and fonts to the layout and functionality.
Room to Grow: WordPress can handle anything you throw at it. Start with a simple blog and expand to an online store or membership site down the track. It’s like having a house with an extension already built in!
You’re the Boss: With WordPress.org, you own your website and all its data. No need to worry about someone else pulling the plug or holding your content hostage. (Just to be clear, this is different from WordPress.com, which has limitations.)
Support Crew: The WordPress community is like a big, friendly family. There’s always someone to lend a hand or offer advice if you get stuck.

Hosted Website Builders: The Easy Option

Website builders are tempting, I get it. They’re like those instant meals you can whip up when you’re short on time. Convenient, but not always the most satisfying.

Ease of Use: No coding required! But that also means less control over how your website looks and functions.
Limited Customisation: You’re stuck with the templates and features they offer. It’s like choosing from a set menu – you might not find exactly what you’re craving.
Less Control: You’re relying on the platform to keep things running smoothly. It’s like renting a flat – you don’t have to worry about maintenance, but you also can’t knock down any walls.

Why I Specialise in WordPress (But Recommend Other Options Too)

I’ve been working with WordPress for a decade, and I’ve seen firsthand how powerful and versatile it can be. But I also know it’s not the right fit for everyone. The learning curve is a LOT!

If you’re looking for a simple, affordable solution for a basic website, a general-purpose website builder might be a good option. And if you’re primarily focused on e-commerce, Shopify is worth considering.

Beware of “Designer-Friendly” Plugins

Some web designers might try to steer you towards website builders or specific WordPress plugins because they’re easier for them to use, not necessarily because they’re the best solution for you. Whilst I use Elementor my personal preference is Kadence Theme which is very flexible and feature-rich.

Making the Right Choice: Key Considerations

Technical Skills: How comfortable are you with managing a website?
Customisation: How important is having a unique and tailored website?
Budget: Factor in hosting and potential plugin costs for WordPress.
E-commerce Needs: Do you need a full-fledged online store?
Long-Term Goals: How do you see your website evolving?
