Think of it as building a house: you need a solid foundation, a well-designed interior, and a welcoming entrance. That’s how I’ve come to view SEO after 30 years in the digital industry. While the specifics might change, the core principles remain.

As John Mueller from Google Search Central often says, SEO is a marathon, not a sprint. Couldn’t agree more. It’s about consistent effort and doing things the right way.

Beyond Keywords – Other SEO tips on what Really Matters

Keywords are still relevant, but they’re just one element of effective SEO tips.

Simply stuffing keywords into your website won’t achieve the desired results. Search engines are far too sophisticated for that.

They prioritise websites that offer valuable, relevant, and engaging content for users. The key is to focus on your audience, not just the search engines. Remember when keyword density was the obsession? Those days are thankfully behind us.

And speaking of phones, these days, most people browse the web on their mobiles.

So, if your website isn’t mobile-friendly, you’re missing out on a huge chunk of potential customers.

While it can be technical, it’s crucial for SEO success. Those meta descriptions I’ve mentioned before are still important – they’re the concise summaries displayed under your website listing in search results, so make them compelling and relevant.

Technical SEO is the foundation upon which everything else is built. If your website has technical issues, it will be difficult for search engines to understand and rank your content, regardless of how good it is. Don’t overlook these technical SEO tips – they’re essential for a strong online presence.

While Google can rewrite meta descriptions if they deem them unhelpful or irrelevant (and they do this fairly often, though the exact statistics fluctuate), a well-crafted meta description is still your best chance to make a good first impression and encourage clicks.

Build Authority, Not Just Random Links

This is one of the most important SEO tips: focus on earning high-quality links.

Link building remains a valuable SEO tactic, but it’s not about accumulating as many links as possible. The focus should be on acquiring high-quality links from reputable websites.

Prioritise building relationships with other businesses in your industry and creating content that others naturally want to reference. Think quality over quantity. A few links from authoritative sources are significantly more beneficial than numerous low-quality links.

John Mueller has often spoken about the importance of earning links, rather than simply building them. Focus on creating valuable content that people genuinely want to share and link to.
